A Night of Hardcore: Saturn’s Passenger and Disenfutured
by Erika Szumel
ASBURY PARK, New Jersey – A few local hardcore bands were rounded up for this bill—Saturn’s Passenger, Disenfutured, Forced, and Omen Grey. The free show, held on March 19 at Asbury Park Brewery, was packed from 7 p.m. through the end of the night.
The evening kicked off with Saturn’s Passenger, a three-piece band that started in a garage in Toms River, New Jersey. In 2023, these childhood friends came together and decided to “play whatever comes out," and the band was born.
Saturn’s Passenger’s sound is a blend of aggressive noise with more melodic elements. From the start of the set to the very end, the energy was high and the music was loud. A lot of bands in the hardcore genre, especially smaller ones, tend to sound muddy and unclear. But Saturn’s Passenger did quite the opposite, and by their output, it’s clear they’ve spent a lot of time in the studio.
The band played a heavy, grungy set including their first EP, Apart, which includes Painted (In a Corner) and Copperthroat followed by unreleased songs Nephilim, Run, and Silk. This crew doesn’t have a specific style or sound in mind; they simply write music that they like to play, now writing their first full-length album.
Next up: Disenfutured. The room lit up when this New Jersey-based punk band took the stage. Their sound draws on many different influences and styles, mainly falling in the alternative metal genre, but can be compared to bands like Gulch, GEL, and Turnstile with the guitar chugging and experimental song structures. The crowd was incredibly receptive to Disenfutured’s performance of Mist, evident by the continuous headbanging and skanking. Their new album is set to release on April 10.
Things got wild during the Forced set, when a few fans started doing some spinkicks. The heavy metal band played their EP that was released in July 2025, Forgive and Forget. It was an aggressive and super loud set—some of the true hardcore elements.
Omen Grey, a New Jersey post-hardcore band, closed out the night with their latest release, an EP called Explosive Content and a single they put out in 2025, 10 Different Ways. This band features a fitting mix of post-hardcore with some punk elements, overall boasting a smashing sound and strong vocalist.
There’s something special about watching local intense bands and enthusiasts come together in a scene like this, supporting each other, jamming out to some hardcore music, and headbanging like hell.
