Song Review: “what else could i be doin’?” by Runner’s High
By Brittany Davis
Jacksonville, Florida’s very own Runner’s High has been working on a new album which is slated to be more alternative driven with shoegaze elements. Formerly known for their indie rock/pop band sound, they have shifted gears with their latest song, “what else could i be doin’?” The band consists of Cameron Korn on lead vocals and guitar, Carson Hall on guitar and backup vocals, Brian Wright on bass, and Liam Murphy on drums and backup vocals. This song is a quick easy listen, following the lead of previous songs.
This track has an explosive opening with loud punching snare drums while the electric guitar is slickly easing in with the bass-line heavily strummed, guiding the song to its heavy build. The lead vocals are bellowing with soft sadness as the backing vocals are higher with light brightness to the slightly sorrowed track. There seems to be a theme of the “what if’s” of life with the lyrics: “And yeah I’m happy being with you. But there’s a million things I wanna do and sometimes I wonder what else could I be up to?” The lyrics describe being held back from exploring in their life, but they are also complacent with the way their relationship is going. It’s a complex feeling of realizing you could want more for yourself; however, you’re okay with trying to figure it out along the way. This band loves a good musical breakdown with this track. It’s given to the electric guitar as the drums help to fill the breakdown; as the song is nearing its end the vocals flow slowly, leaving you with a small haunting feeling about the current what's-if of your own life.
