Song Review: “Emergency Contact” by Chloe Star

By Rowyn Belt

Chloe Star is back again with a single called Emergency Contact, another anthem piece she created for all of the independent women around her. Star is known for her raw, vulnerable music, and this track holds that same standard. “The song itself just feels like you’re walking through the clouds with your middle finger to the sky,” she stated about the March 30 release, and that couldn’t be more true.

The pop artist’s latest number opens with a guitar and bass riff, immediately bringing energy to the tune. As soon as the kick drum starts, fans know that they’re in for yet another killer track. The first lyrics, “shit I’m stuck in the cycle of hating, fucking, loving you,” serve as a brutal and deep cut to whoever this song was inspired by. Star never holds back, and her instrumentation throughout the entirety of the song leans into an intense, angry emotion.

The switch in drum pattern in the first chorus of Emergency Contact is genius. Moving from no drums to a much slower, heavier, and more grounded feel really brings forth the sensation of a heart thumping in the chest. Although it’s not modeled directly on the kick drum, it’s still clear that the second half of Star’s refrain is full of frustration and power. With the final chorus lyrics, “now wait, nevermind, fuck that- I am not your emergency contact,” the audience really gets to feel Star walking away from this song with power.

Despite the track only measuring to two minutes and twenty-two seconds, it is full of energy that can almost entirely be classified as animosity. Emergency Contact remains a relatable, screamable anthem for all of her fans, and Chloe Star continues to be the advocate and icon that queer and marginalized communities need. When others cannot shout, Star will scream for them, and Emergency Contact is quite the powerful scream.
