Navigating Self-Harm Awareness Month

By Rowyn Belt

When life gets stressful, we all need somewhere to turn to. Whether it be to a record player, a pair of airpods, the terrible sound system in your car, or another means of listening, there is always something. The idea that blocking out the world’s noise, making everything stop, is soothing- it helps us to slow down and think a little less. March is self harm awareness month, and this month, we all could do with slowing down and overthinking a little bit less. Some of the best songs to lose yourself to and help cope with the world include pond by Chloe Moriondo, Lights Out by FIZZ, and When Something Turns to Peace by Chris Lippincott.

Chloe Moriondo’s song pond comes from the album oyster, released in March of 2025. The entire record is full of incredible hyper-pop hits, but pond is the most gut-wretching of the bunch. This tune features Moriondo’s voice and piano, as well as a deep synth that brings the album’s water theme straight to mind. The chorus lyrics, “I’ve been waiting at the pond, but it’s been too long and I’m scared that I can’t love somebody else,” provide a perfect amount of connection from singer to listener, keying us into Moriondo’s own mental struggles and letting her poetic words help us process our own.

Lights Out by FIZZ is from the band’s only album, The Secret To Life. Coming in as the 11th track on the album, it is the perfect slowdown before the finale. Lights Out is all about having one person who you can always rely on, with lyrics like, “the good and the bad and the terrible shape me, but I’ve never met anyone quite like you.” This song is one that, though it’s not very popular, holds such deep intention in its words and within the music itself. The majority-acapella piece is truly one to hold on to.

Chris Lippincott’s single When Something Turns to Peace is one of the most beautiful releases of 2026 so far. The February-dropped single is full of gorgeous instrumentation, the perfect way to forget about your own troubles. Lippincott’s elegiac lyrics, “In between the days, the moon, it longs- my heart’s ablaze. Like forcing tides, I recognize the patterns all repeat,” feel as heavy as loss and bring tears to the eyes of the listener, letting them release all of their built-up emotions.

These songs are ones that hold such deep emotional intention, they keep people steady through their instrumentation and artistic lyrics. All three of these artists deserve more than any fanbase can give them through the lives they’ve saved and the emotions they’ve made us feel. Nothing in the world is more powerful than music.
