Song review: “Wendy, I” by Foxlair
by Jade DelBen
If you keep up-to-date with new groups in the Orlando scene, you’ve undoubtedly heard of Foxlair, who have recently released their second single: Wendy, I. As a scrappy quintet, the band features Mateo Martens on guitar and vocals, Ella Spokas on keyboard, saxophone, and vocals, Luke Dunbar on bass, Lucca Colucciello on guitar, and Zakk Ricci on drums. Those familiar with the Orlando scene will recognize Colucciello and Ricci from the bands Walking Blue and Maisy, respectively, and fans of either group will find plenty to enjoy from Foxlair.
The eclectic arrangement of Wendy, I sets Foxlair apart from their contemporaries. The band’s self-described influences of folk rock and Midwest emo make it difficult to place their productions in a box, which is evident by the contrast between Wendy, I and their previous single, I Accidentally Sewed Your Fingers Together. While that song is straightforward indie rock/emo with an arrangement ornamented by Martens and Spokas singing in counterpoint, the band opts for a different style in Wendy, I.
Overall, the song features a brisk affair with jangly rhythm guitar, reminiscent of some Midwest emo and slacker rock, along with prominent highlights of saxophone and banjo. The band effectively varies the song’s dynamics to create interest, and the refrain is very memorable, with wordless vocals and saxophone playing the same melody in unison. The single’s artwork is also drawn in a distinctive, scribbled style, with a horned beast standing above someone—presumably the character Wendy—and branches scattered along the margins of the cover. Additionally, the title is written to look like another branch, which is a fitting stylistic touch.
Taken together, Wendy, I and I Accidentally Sewed Your Fingers Together make a promising showcase for one of Orlando’s best new groups. Those in the central Florida area can see Foxlair perform at Stardust Video & Coffee and University Boba House TPA on April 4 and 25, respectively.
