Meg Smith creates a Disco Dystopia at the Schubas Tavern
CHICAGO – On September 10, pop sensation Meg Smith brought her DISCO DYSTOPIA tour to the Schubas Tavern for a night of joy, dancing, and singing, making this show unforgettable.
Opening the show for Smith was Cat Merkle and Sarah Krohn. Merkle is a Chicago-based pop singer-songwriter. She performed at the tavern with Mike DeMaria, Ben Alston, and Jivan Nallamothu. Her music ranges from very slow and heartfelt to upbeat and dramatic, taking inspiration from singers such as Lizzy McAlpine. Throughout the show, Merkle sang songs from her new EP, Sweet, Sweet Girl.
Local indie pop rock artist Krohn took the stage with million bijillion, Ivan Khurudzhi, and Lebi. Her music is very fun and upbeat while also comparing to artists like Phoebe Bridgers by mixing vulnerability with an exciting atmosphere. Both opening artists were an incredible start to the show, getting everyone hyped up and ready for Smith to come out.
Starting out the set was Introduction from her newest album DISCO DYSTOPIA. As the instrumental song played, Smith and her backup dancers Lorein Chua and Jess Alba, who also choreographed the entire show, walked on the stage and removed Smith’s jacket to reveal her outfit for Chicago, which was a union jack bralette and blue sparkly shorts—an incredibly fitting look as one of the songs she performed references a British accent.
She started out the show performing the title song of the record. She and her dancers broke out into incredible choreography to the song, and the audience immediately started singing along. After a few more from DISCO DYSTOPIA were played such as Winner and Carlos, Get in the Car!, the dancers ran around with bubbles, making it look even more colorful during Winner. Next came a couple of songs from her other album, The Gospel According to Meg Smith, which included blasphemy! and you fake your british accent. The dancers brought out a giant flag which had the tour manager hiding behind it, to Smith’s surprise.
Next were Cross My Heart I Hope U Die and Joni, a much slower song. Everyone sang along to the cover she played mid-show: Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. She played a few more DISCO DYSTOPIA songs: Hedonistic and Girls Just Wanna Be Famous. During both songs, Smith came out and danced in the audience as a circle formed around her. She also invited a bunch of audience members onto the stage to sing and dance with her, which was incredible to see everyone having fun.
She closed out the show with jesus christ in a mini skirt playing on the saxophone, with everyone clapping and wishing there was more.
